Namaawu Ibrahim Taimako

I was born in 1969 as the eighth child of my parents. Another girl was born later, so we are with nine sisters and brothers. We are Fra-Fra: this is a tribe who live in northern Ghana, around the city of Bolgatanga. My parents were both herbalists who travelled around the country for a long time to sell medicinal herbs. The knowledge of these herbs comes from my mother's parents and great-parents, as well as from my father's side of the family. When they started their family, my parents bought a piece of land close to the city of Tamale. My father died at a rather early age, soon after the birth of my youngest sister. My mother still treats patients, and in addition she runs a nursery where she grows trees and herbs. I was trained to be a hairdresser and I had my own hairdresser's shop on my mother's land until I founded "Meet Africa". In October 2003. I married and on the eighth January 2004 I gave birth to my first son: Olua Bumi Richard Safiju. On the 20th November 2006 my second son was born: Mustapha Iyenda Tamawo. From my first marriage I have a daughter who is now 19 years old. Since I got married I have lived in a house of my own at about a 10-minute walk from my mother's house. I am a spontaneous and happy woman, and enjoy socializing with other people. I greatly enjoy explaining our way of life and our traditions to foreigners. This is why I warmly welcome them to Ghana.
